In this case, people prefer public pools. People having pool in their backyards spend pleasant times in their houses. A very important aspect of the public pools is: the cleanness of water in these pools. Periodic care of the pool must be held and disinfection must be implemented. Otherwise, these places will be a threat for human health. Disinfection of these pools must be made by the use of chemicals.

All our chemicals are approved by the Ministry Of Health.

First Point of Pool Chemicals: Disinfectants

In order for the disinfection of the pool water, chlorine is used. Chlorine may be in the forms of liquid, granule and tablet forms.

Liquid form of chlorine must be observed carefullay when used in the pool water as the values of pool water is not stable. The stability of hypochlorine is increased by different ways and can be used by a chlorine dosage pump. This type of chlorine is ideal for indoor pools.

When we talk about powdered chlorine, you will see that this chlorine contains approx. 56%-90% active chlorine. It is a granule chemical whose stabilisator melts heavily. The activity level of this type of chlorine is between 6,8 and 7,4.

Besides all these types, tablet chlorine is also used in the swimming pools. Tablet chlorine contains 90% active chlorine and it is a kind of chemical whose stabilisator melts in the form of a 200 gr.tablet.

Chlorine must always be used in the disinfection systems for the pools to stay hygenic.

Why should chlorine be used in swimming pools?

Despite the cleaning function of chlorine in the pools, chlorine has also some negative effects as well. Excess use of chlorine creates a bad odor in the pool and this harms the skin of the users. Chlorine is a crucial chemical for swimming pools when used correcty and appropriately.

How is a chlorine pool cleaned?

For the best cleaning of a swimming pool, use of chlorine is a must. By the use of chlorine, algae formation is prevented and water becomes pure. Chlorine fights with the harmful microorganisms and bacteria in the pool. It makes them ineffective and cleans the water inside the pool.

Chlorine is seperated to two important molecules within the pool: hypochloride ion and hypochlorose ion. These two molecules fight with the harmful microorgnisms in the pool. It is possible to oxidize an organism within seconds by the help of hypochlorose acid. Hypochloride ion oxidizes within 30 minutes. These two chemicals are crucial for the hygene of the pool.

Applying the appropriate pool chemical is important and easy. In the fast guide below, you can read information about pool chemicals and also about how to keep your pool clean and hygenic.

Pool Water Balance

Water of your pool is sensitive. And it has to be balanced to achieve the harmony in the pool. Pool water must not be too soft or too hard, must be just in balance. The accurate measure of this softness is made by ph level. Balancing your pool means keeping the ph level between 7,4 and 7,6

There are three components to keep this value in balance:

  1. Ph level
  2. Alkalinity level
  3. Calcium hardness level

pH Levels

Ideal ph levels are between 7,4 and 7,6. pH is ineffective by itself. Rain water, swimmers and everything that enters inside the water may affect ph level. When pH is low, your water is defined as acidic and when it is high, it is defined as basic.

The best example about giving you an idea about the functioning of pH is that the pH of our tears is neutral. If they had low pH, our eyes would burn and if high pH, our eyes would dry

As the pH levels change very often, you should always have a pH enhancer or a pH lowering chemical. As adding alkalinity enhancer increases the pH level of your pool, if you have pH problems you should not only watch the pH levels but the alkalinity levels as well.

Alkalinity levels

Ideal alkalinity level is between 100 ppm and 150 ppm. Alkalinity is a pH buffer that means it absorbs the great changes in the water before these changes affect the pH level.

As alkalinity levels may fluctuate very easily, it will be a good idea to have a alkalinity enhancer at hand.

Calcium Hardness

Ideal calcium hardness level is between 175 ppm and 300 ppm. Without calcium, your water will want calcium and it will obtain this calcium from the plaster of the pool or somewhere else. The basic reason behind the calcification of the pool walls and surface is this.

How do you maintain the water balance?

You should follow the pH and alkalinity levels of your pool by using test kits and test strips at least twice a week. You have to keep these chemicals in stock to keep your pool water in balance:

  1. pH enhancer
  2. pH reducer
  3. Alkalinity enhancer

You will realise that we are not mentioning alkalinity reducer. Most of the pool companies do not produce alkalinity reducer and here are the reasons:

If your pH and alkalinity low, alkalinity enhancer will increase them both. If pH does not reach 7,4, you may have to add a little bit pH enhancer

If both of your pH and alkalinity are high, pH reducer will decrease both of them.

If only your alkalinity is high, your pH will also be high and you can use pH reducer.

If your pool is balanced in an appropriate way, this will provide you disinfection products-especially chlorine-operate more effectively.

Sanitation

The most widespread type of pool disinfectants is chlorine but there are many others as well such as:

  • Salt
  • Stabilised Chlorine
  • Minerals

Chlorine levels

Ideal chlorine levels are between 1 ppm and 3 ppm. Chlorine is a very effective bacteria and algae killer and very economical at the same time. There are a few ways of adding chlorine to pool water:

  1. Chlorine tablets
  2. Granule chlorine or powder chlorine
  3. Salt chlorine generator: converts table salt to chlorine

Mineral system

While using mineral system, the ideal chlorine level is 0,5 ppm. Silver and copper minerals are poured to the water by a mineral system that is alike chlorinator. These minerals operate to stabilise water but they are much slower than chlorine. As chlorine is still essential, mineral system is not an alternative for chlorine but as a backup may be used in samll amounts.

What is pool shocking?

When a chlorine particule attacks the bacteria or other organic substances in water and kills them, it is converted to chloramine or chlorine that is inactive and that does not kill bacteria anymore. This particle will swim in the water till it is oxidised or split.

What is cutting point oxidisation?

For reaching the cutting point oxidisation, chlorine reading must be 10 ppm above the compound chlorine reading. Your chlorine has two values: Free chlorine (FC) and compound chlorine (CC) Free chlorine means the chlorine free and ready to kill chlorine.

Note: Pool shock products are used with a nonstable chlorine and do not contain any chlorine. They will enter the pool, maket he operation and will be defeated by the sun’s UV rays. For this reason, it is important for you to shock your pool at night or in twilight and make it operate for 8 hours (while the pool is functioning)

Other pool chemicals

If you have used pH products, alkalinity products, calcium products and disinfectants throughout the year, your pool will be clean and hygenic but there are also other chemicals you should be familiar with:

Cyanuric acid or Stabilisator pool chemicals

Most of the chlorine products you add to your pool will be stabilised chlorine. In addition to this, if you start with freshwater, you may want to add a little cyanuric acid (water balancer) as a balancing base for the chlorine not to be burned by the UV rays of the sun. This chemical will protect your chlorine from sun.

Cyanuric acid reducer pool chemicals

There will be times when your cyanuric acid level will be higher than the ideal level and this may create problems. There are ways to decrease cyanuric acid as it will not decrease by itself. If you are in a hurry, you will need a cyanuric acid reducer to solve this problem.

Algaecides (Algae preventers)

The general name given to the pool chemicals used for preventing algae in the pools is algaecides. There are some algaecides sold eveywhere but the best algaecide is chlorine. For algae problems, if chlorine is not enough,  then algaecide is used. If your chlorine level falls and you can not catch it in the right time, algaecide will keep the algae away till the chlorine is increased to the ideal level again.

Precipitators, Flocculants and water purifier chemicals

A precipitator or a water purifier makes all these small particles that blur the water to bigger pieces so that your filter will make water clear.

Precipitators will catch these small partciles, combines them together and sinks them to the surface of the pool. You may remove these particles away from your pool by a pool vacuum cleaner.

Stain and lime remover chemicals

If there are metals in your pool such as copper and iron, you may use a stain or lime remover to keep these metals in solution so that your pool filter may filter them.

In short, you have to keep your pool chemicals in the below mentioned levels in order to protect your pool in a healthy position.

pH: 7,4 and 7,6

Alkalinity: 100 ila 150 ppm

Calcium hardness: For concrete pools betw. 175 and 225 ppm and betw. 225 and 275 ppm

For pools with chlorine and salt:  between 1 and 3 ppm (best is 3 ppm)

For mineral system pools: 0,5 ppm klor

The best way of not using too many pool chemicals is to be sure about a good pool circulation and filtration and to vacuum your pool frequently.
